Antigoni Pericleous Papadopoulou is a member of the Democratic Party (DIKO-Cyprus), and since 1994 has been the President of the Women Organization of the Democratic Party (GODIK). She is a former member of the European Parliament (S&D) (2009-2014) , a member of the National House of Representatives and also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (2001 – 2009). She holds a Postgraduate Degree in Social Sciences (Gender Equality) from the University of the Aegean, Rhodes, Greece, a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Mediterranean institute of Management and a Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in Chemistry from the University of Lancaster (UK) with previous undergraduate studies at Russel Sage College (USA). Antigoni was born in the town of Morphou, Nicosia District, now in the area occupied by Turkish troops and lives in Strovolos- Nicosia. She is married with two children. During her professional career she worked as a Quality Control Manager for the Cyprus Calrsberg Brewery for 23 years.She stopped her professional career when she was first elected as Member of the House of Representatives (2001). During her political career, Antigoni was the first elected female Mayor of Morphou (1996-2001). She was a member of the House of Representatives (2001-2009) and of the Municipal Council of Strovolos (1991-1996). Since 1994 she has been a member of the National Machinery for Women’s Rights, and since 2014 has been co-ordinator of the Committee on European Affairs. She is also a member of the Central Committee and the Executive Bureau of the Democratic Party DIKO (1978-present) and since 2011 has been President of the Non-Governmental Organization “Palmos Zois” (Pulse of Life)which she has established aiming to increase awareness on cardiac arrest. Among her honors and achievements, Antigoni was granted various scholarships by Fulbright, Lancaster University and the British Council and received distinctions in her post graduate Degrees and honors for her parliamentary work at the European Parliament. She was one of the first two Cypriot women elected as Members of the European Parliament (2009), the first female Chair of the Committee of Economic Affairs and Budgeting of the House of Representatives, Cyprus (2006–2009) and was Vice Chairperson of the Committee of Economic Affairs of the Council of Europe (2006–2009). She has published three books and makes regularly political interventions in local media. As an artist/painter participates in group exhibitions and has already presented three solo exhibitions.
